Sleeping Policy

Dec 3, 2023

Education [Early Childhood Centre] Regulations 2008 45 Premises and facilities standard: general 45 1 (a), 45 1(a)(ii)

Rationale

All children who attend the centre will have the opportunity for undisturbed rest if required in a safe and well monitored environment. All children are entitled to undisturbed rest if required and Early Childhood on Stafford will not compromise their well-being by denying such rest.

  • Parents will inform staff of the sleeping needs for their child at the time of enrollment and/or on entry.
  • The sleep areas will be visible in both rooms.
  • Safe and suitable individual beds and bedding will be available.
  • Beds will be placed and arranged to ensure hygienic, safe and adequate means of access.
  • Each child will have their own linen and all linen will be laundered by the centre weekly.
  • All sleeping children will be checked to ensure they are sleeping safely and covered.
  • Children sleeping will be monitored every 5 minutes(checked for warmth /breathing) and this will be recorded on the routines section on the Story Park app (which parents can access for their child's sleep information).
  • A daily record of the child's sleeping pattern will be kept (on Story-park App)
  • It is not permissible to give children food or liquid while they are in their bed.
  • Children are able to be wrapped but not be restrained while they are sleeping.
  • Except in special circumstances - each child, if asleep, will not be woken by staff at the request of the parent unless 45 minutes has passed.  After this time, on the request of the parent/whanau, staff may attempt to break the sleep.  If this causes the child to be upset/distressed, staff will review this procedure with the Parents/whanau.
  • Babies will be placed on their backs to sleep in a cot. No baby will be put to bed on their stomach.
